Why is North India so cold this year? The factors like strong cold winds, heavy snowfall in the mountains, and weather patterns like La Niña, which can make winters harsher. It also raises the possibility of climate changes making seasonal weather more extreme.

Extreme cold temperatures, rainfall and intense fog in the months of December and January are not something new for north and northwest India. And yet, this December feels a little extra cold. I too was wondering the same for the past few days. I have my photos from last year when I went out in the sun during this time. I cannot go out of my blanket now. Here is what is going on:

The surprisingly cold December this year could just be another example of extreme climates becoming more and more frequent, a result of climate change. Across the world, the frequency and intensity of both heat waves and cold waves have increased in the last few years, and are predicted to increase further. An unusual and powerful spell of western disturbances, originating in the Mediterranean sea, has made the Indian subcontinent shiver for the past ten days.

And we are expected to see more of this in coming years.

Because less global warming last year. Last year during coronavirus pendemic, a very few vehicles ran on roads, hence reducing the carbon dioxide from the emission of vehicles. And not only North India, but allover world is experiencing increased cold this year.

It is not excessively cold. It has the right amount of cold any place of that latitude and elevation in the northern hemisphere should have in winter. Take, for instance, Egypt, Libya, Texas, North Mexico, Cape Town all have similar cold in the winter. All these places are at a similar latitude from equator.
