Then the calculator became affordable in the 1970’s and people were afraid that children would forget the times tables and how to multiply and divide using pencil and paper. The fears that many people had came true.

But, now calculators are everywhere. So, the lost skill has been replaced by a new skill.

If you were on a dessert island with no calculator and had to divide 13 coconuts between 7 people, you might have a problem. But, other that that, people seem to get along just fine with calculators.

There are lots of examples like this. Students used to learn cursive handwriting in school. Now they have horrible handwriting. Students used to learn typing in school. Now they bang out texts with two fingers.

Technology changes the basic skills you need to survive. As long as the technology is available, we get along just fine.
